From this day forward coconut oil should be your new best friend. Coconut oil is by no means something new. There are studies that date uses for the oil all the way back to 1500BC. I have come to love coconut oil for the health benefits along with the beauty benefits. Let’s explore some of the uses for coconut oil and they way we use it in our house.
Cooking: The number one use for coconut oil is to use it for cooking. It is stable enough to reduce free-radical producing heat damage. It also promotes weight loss, heart health, good immune system health, and helps maintain normal blood sugar levels. An added perk is it gives a yummy flavor to many dishes. I use it for sauteing, baking, and as a butter replacement for toast. *Side note, it can also be used as, what my husband calls it, a power punch for coffee and green tea. Stir a teaspoon into your hot drink for added flavor and nutrients.
Hair: Coconut oil can be used as a deep conditioning treatment for your locks. I like to use mine as an overnight therapy. Since the oil is in a solid form, I heat it to a liquid in a plastic bag and then cut the corner off and drizzle into my hair. Comb it through your strands from root to tip. I do this at the end of the day and apply it to dry hair. Cover with a shower cap or towel to avoid getting your pillow greasy and then wash out in the morning. I have also used it for taming frizz and fly away hairs. Take a small amount on your finger tips and use sparingly to avoid a greasy do.
Skin: Coconut oil can do wonders for dry skin! We use it on our lips to protect against chapping from the wind and also for our hands during the winter months to prevent tiny cracks. My husband swabs his nostrils with is to prevent tiny nose cracks from blowing his nose often during the cold months. During the summer though, I like to slather some on my legs for a healthy glow rather than using a thick lotion to moisturize.
Teeth: Oil pulling is a healthy way to clean and detoxify your teeth and gums. It attacks the bacteria that causes tooth decay. Added bonus: It helps whiten your teeth too! For more info on oil pulling click here.
