So I know that I’ve posted about the 21 Day Fix several times since starting the program 28 days ago. This post though is because in my opinion, the 21 Day Fix is THE healthiest, most effective way to lead a healthy lifestyle. Some may be thinking that is a very bold statement and that there is nothing to back that up. Others may disagree and believe that other methods are more effective than this. I did say that this is my opinion, but there is fact behind this. So I am going to reveal the “secret” to this program.

I have always envisioned my body to look a certain way and I have always thought of how I would get it to look that way. Over the years I have tried many methods. I have tried the quick fix, you know the one where you go to GNC and you buy some fat burners, some Hydroxycut or something of that effect, and some energy drinks that are perceived to be healthy. Then you go home, you take these and you do some cardio. Well that method showed some improvement, but that is obviously not a lasting method and you can only handle the “jitters” for so long until you realize… something about this picture just isn’t right! Then came the restricted diet method. I would only eat certain types of foods in order to achieve results. During the trial of this method, I would eat mainly boiled or grilled chicken, frozen veggies (I was living alone and didn’t want produce to spoil, plus the packaging said “all natural”) , eggs, and salads. I would go to the gym for about an hour or more per day. Mainly doing cardio then using the equipment to target certain problem areas. There was some progress from this, I felt pretty good and I looked pretty good. I did not have a toned core, but I read that is the hardest area to work. I tried a calorie counting program, that lasted about a day especially because this system didn’t have restrictions. So if I wanted to eat my daily calories in Snickers bars technically I could and I would eventually lose weight. HA! I worked out with a personal trainer, who is now my husband, he put me through some tough workouts and I built muscle from these routines, but I was still eating mediocre and I wasn’t seeing the body I wanted to see. I think you get the gist of what I am saying that I have tried almost everything. Oh wait, I just thought of another. I tried some sort of wrap thingy. You know, the type that says lose inches in just 3 applications. Ummm….okay, needless to say I don’t really need to explain this one, because yeah, that doesn’t work either!!
Enough with the background info, everyone is waiting for the juicy details of the secret! So upon joining Beachbody, along came the 21 Day Fix. I read about it, I watched some videos, and I saw a lot of internet hype. First thought was this is not going to work. I don’t want a program that tells me what to eat. I thought I tried something like this in the past and I didn’t want grilled chicken and raw spinach every day. Second thought, color coded containers just aren’t my thing. I am a busy mom, sometimes I don’t have time to sit there and put food in containers, and I bet the containers are so tiny! Third thought, this isn’t going to work! How are 30 minute “aerobic looking” workouts going to get me in awesome shape?! HA! I am going to be that little puppy dog now and put my tail between my legs while I shove my foot in my mouth!

Let’s take this from the top and breakdown each one of my “thoughts.” Thought 1: This program DOES NOT tell you what to eat! This program provides a meal guide book. In this book, there is a chart where you can figure out the correct number of containers of each type of food that you should consume per day. This is based upon your own body weight and number or calories you should consume while eating healthy and working out (**This is the ONLY time you count anything during this program). Also included in this guide is a list of food that goes to each container. So, you choose what you are eating and when you are eating it. It also provides sample meal plans to show you how to divide your containers throughout the day. Now this is something no one or any other program has ever provided for me. The food lists are not only 5-10 items either, you can choose from a lot of options. This allows you to make your own meals based upon you and your family’s tastes. It also shows you how to incorporate certain things you love, such as wine and chocolate. Negative thoughts- 0, Fix -1. Thought 2: The color coded containers are AWESOME! Sure, I am a busy mom, but I store food in Tupperware containers already soooo why can’t I put my portions into color coded ones? The containers actually SIMPLIFIED my prepping. I would plan out my snacks in advance. One thing I liked about it…I didn’t have to count!! No more of the 10 grapes here, 14 almonds there. I would just put them in the container to portion them out then dump them in a ziplock for later! So easy! My thought about the containers being tiny was true…until I dumped the food on a plate. At this point I realized 2 things, I was eating portions that were too big for me and I wasn’t eating enough variety. Eureka! The answer lies here….I always complained that no one ever told me what to do right. Well, everyone gave their advice to cut back on carbs, no white bread, less sugar, no soda, etc. That helps for sure, BUT that does not tell you the RIGHT thing to do. All that tells is a lot of things NOT to do! Portion control (let’s not even say “control” let’s say portion understanding) paired with clean and healthy eating= results. Which leads into the third thought about the workouts not working. To me, the sneak peek videos looked like an 80’s workout to me and I thought they wouldn’t work because I was used to more extreme routines. Well, let me tell you, and I know I am not the only one because I have asked others that used this program, these workouts do work and you do see results from them and they do build lean muscle and blast fat!! This goes back to what an elementary teacher once told me, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” Very true!
