I came across a pic that stated 10 Tips for a Healthier Weekend, just in time for well…the weekend! I am going to give some extra advice for these 10 tips.
1. Do your workouts in the morning before you head out for the day.
This tip is super helpful on the weekends because there are tons of excuses that can just pop up throughout the day! For those of you that like to sleep in on the weekends, that’s okay, still plan to do it first thing when you wake up in the morning. You will be feeling extra energized and I can bet it will set the tone for the rest of your day. Take on the weekend with a smile!
2. Splurge, in a healthy way.
Sounds easy right? Probably easier said than done. My advice for this one is think of the items you usually crave and prepare a healthier alternative ahead of time. If it is the salty/sweet treat you like, mix up your own bag of trail mix to snack on over the weekend. I personally have a sweet tooth and that is what I typically crave. Here are 2 easy recipes for healthy sweet treats Chocolate Shakeology Balls and Sweet Baked Apples and Pears
3. Eat like you do on the weekdays.
Treat the weekends like any other day of the week. Why should they be any different? Just because for most people there is no work doesn’t mean that it is a 2 day long cheat. Plan and prep your meals just as though you would on a weekday. You may need to tweak the time from when you normally eat, but the weekends should follow suit with any other day.
4. Don’t to a party hungry.
If you are attending a party, most likely there will be unhealthy treats available and tempting! Prepare yourself for this and eat a meal before you go or if the social gathering is later in the evening have a snack and 8oz of water before you leave. This will leave you full and less likely to munch on something you may regret and it will give you more time at the party to socialize and talk to friends!
5. Schedule some relaxation time.
Often times the weekends are the time to get things done! Before you know it, your weekend is jammed packed with things to do and you have no down time. This also can lead to making poor eating choices. If you do not prepare snacks for when you are on the go you will more likely go for something convenient and most times unhealthy. Take the time to read a book or take a quick power nap.
6. Do something active! Get outside !
Take advantage of Summer time and warm weather. Plan an outside activity such as a bike ride or a hike. An outdoor activity our family likes to do is to visit the local farm. We feed the ducks and walk the paths. There are plenty of outdoor activities…schedule them…do them…and enjoy them before it is too late!
7. Get enough sleep.
I cannot stress this enough. The proper amount of sleep is often times looked over by so many, especially on the weekends. If you have plans that will keep you up late, plan to sleep in. Whatever it is you can do, plan to get enough sleep. It is suggested that adults sleep 6-8 hours per night.
8. Prep for the week ahead.
Prepping for the week ahead is another way to have a healthier weekend because it keeps you on track and in the healthy mindset. If you are preparing for a healthy week, then you won’t be thinking about temptations and excuses will less likely derail you from your progress.
9. Don’t have a lazy Sunday, be productive!
If you like to rest on Sundays that is fine to plan a relaxing day, but there is a difference between relaxing and lazy! Do something productive that you will feel good about when heading into Monday morning. Sunday is my prep day. I plan and prep my family’s meals for the week. It allows me to know that I did not “waste” a day and also I am ready to go Monday so there is no doubt I will have an awesome week ahead of me!
10. Order well while ordering out.
This is a BIG one! Dining out isn’t something you need to skip out on! Make smart choices when dining out. Pay attention to portion sizes so that you don’t over do it. Take half home and eat the left overs for lunch. Often times, I will check out the menu ahead of time and have an idea of what I will be ordering. Also, don’t go to dinner starving! Plan to eat a light snack about 2 hours before dining out, that way you will not order 1 of everything just because it all “sounds so good”
Hope these tips help you to stay on track! And remember no one is perfect so if you do have a time over the weekend that you binge and you are feeling guilty, don’t! Simply acknowledge it, forgive yourself, and learn from it for next time.
Have a wonderful weekend!
